India Celebrating Global Wind Day

News Excerpt:

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organized ‘Global Wind Day’ on the 15th of June 2024, aimed at celebrating the glorious success of the Indian Wind Sector so far and also discussing the potential way forward for accelerating wind energy adoption in India.

More about the event:

  • Achievements and Current Status: India has built a substantial wind energy sector over more than four decades, achieving a cumulative installed capacity of 46.4 GW by May 2024, making it the fourth largest in the world. This capacity is crucial for India's commitments to increase non-fossil fuel-based energy resources to 50% of its electric power installed capacity by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2070.
  • Panel Discussions: The event featured panel discussions on various aspects of wind energy:
    • Role of Wind Energy in Meeting Power Demand: Discussing the contribution of wind energy to India's energy mix and its role in meeting growing power demands.
    •  Accelerating Onshore Wind Energy Adoption: Strategies to enhance onshore wind energy capacity across different regions of India.
    •  Offshore Wind Development: Exploring opportunities and challenges in developing offshore wind farms to bolster India's energy security.
  • Recognition and Call to Action: Minister of State Shri Shripad Yesso Naik recognized states like Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu for their significant contributions to wind capacity addition in the past fiscal year. He emphasized collective action among stakeholders to achieve renewable energy targets and position India as a global leader in wind energy.
  • Collaborative Efforts: The event was successful due to collaboration among various stakeholders including government bodies like MNRE, industry associations such as Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA), and advocacy groups like Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF) and Solar Power Developers Association (SPDA).
  • Long-term Vision: Secretary MNRE highlighted the need for a balanced approach combining solar and wind energy to ensure a reliable energy grid. He reiterated the goal of reaching 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2070.

Global Wind Day

  • Global Wind Day, observed annually on June 15, highlights the transformative power of wind energy and its potential to reshape energy systems, decarbonize economies, and stimulate job growth.
  • This worldwide event, coordinated by WindEurope, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), and national renewable energy associations, introduces the public to wind energy through various activities.

Wind energy is a crucial element in combating global warming.

  • In 2023, wind energy generation in Europe alone prevented 139 million tons of CO2 emissions.
  • Globally, wind energy has become one of the most cost-effective energy sources, with capacity surpassing the 1 TW milestone in 2023, totaling 1,021 GW.
  • The global wind industry installed a record 117 GW of new capacity in 2023, marking the best year for new wind energy installations.
  • Offshore wind energy also saw significant growth, with 10.8 GW of new capacity added, making 2023 the second-best year in history for this sector.
  • More countries are now developing offshore wind farms, including floating turbines in deep waters, showcasing wind energy's expanding possibilities
