Li-Fi Technology

News Excerpt:

Telecom startup Velmenni has received a grant from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) under the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative for its innovative Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) technology.

  • This funding aims to bolster secure wireless communication for the Indian Defence sector, particularly focusing on the Navy and the unique communication challenges it faces in modern warfare.

How will Li-Fi technology help the Indian Navy?

  • According to Velmenni, its Li-Fi can enhance data transmission for the Indian Navy and other defence applications.
  • It offers enhanced security and performance, making it ideally suited for the Indian Navy‘s real-time communication needs.
  • With LiFi, the Navy can establish high-speed connections in areas where radio frequency (RF) communication may be challenging or compromised.
  • It operates using visible light, allowing data to be transmitted through LEDs. This means that even in highly secure areas, such as underground facilities or shielded rooms, where RF signals cannot penetrate, LiFi can ensure uninterrupted connectivity, enabling seamless communication and coordination during mission-critical operations.

About iDEX Initiative:

  • The Government launched the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) framework to foster innovation and technology development in the Defence and Aerospace Sectors by engaging Industries, including MSMEs, start-ups, individual innovators, R&D institutes, and academia, and promoting self-reliance.
  • The Government has approved a central sector scheme for iDEX with budgetary support of Rs. 498.78 crore for the next 5 years from 2021-22 to 2025-26.
  • The scheme's objective is to provide financial support to nearly 300 Startups/MSMEs/individual innovators and about 20 Partner Incubators through the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO).
  • The Government encourages start-ups to contribute to the defence sector and develop aerospace setups in the country by providing substantial grants, easier and faster access to test facilities/infrastructure available with various Government agencies, co-creation and co-innovation using smooth operating procedures and minimal documentation, and facilitating procurement, thus making the entire regime conducive to them.
