More detail about news:

  • President Droupadi Murmu has accepted  advice from the Cabinet to dissolve the 17th Lok Sabha with immediate effect.

  • The President signed the Order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution.
  • Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5th June met the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan and tendered his resignation along with the Union Council of Ministers.
  • The President accepted the resignation and asked the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed.

Next Government Process

  • Magic number to form a government
    • There are currently 543 members of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. A party or coalition must win 272 Lok Sabha seats, or a majority of at least 50%, in order to form a government.
    • This guarantees that they will have sufficient backing to enact laws and run the government efficiently. The party can form a government on its own if it wins more than half of the seats in the Lok Sabha.
    • The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a majority in the Lok Sabha election.
    • While the NDA is comfortably above the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the BJP, which won 240 seats, has fallen short of the magic number for the first time since 2014 and is critically dependent on its allies for government formation.
  • Dissolving the present govt
    • With a few exceptions for early dissolution, the Lok Sabha dissolves five years after the date of its inaugural session. June 16, 2024 is the end date of the 17th Lok Sabha term, led by the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi has already tendered his resignation. The Lok Sabha has already dissolved after the last Cabinet meeting of Modi 2.0 on June 5.
  • Invite by President
    • In accordance with protocol, the President will summon the largest pre-election party formation, in this case the NDA, which is expected to secure 292 seats. After that, the NDA will have to demonstrate its majority on the house's floor within a set amount of time—possibly as little as one month.
  • Oath taking
    • After proving majority in the House, the government will then proceed to do the oath-taking ceremony with the newly elected MPs.
