  • Indian multi-role stealth frigate INS Shivalik, mission deployed in South China Sea and North Pacific Ocean, has reached Pearl Harbour in Hawaii to take part in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise
  • It was done on completion of JIMEX 24, a bilateral exercise between India and Japan.

About RIMPAC:

  • It is a biennial multinational maritime exercise in and around the Hawaiian Islands to make the world's sea lanes safer.
  • RIMPAC-2024 is  the 24th such exercise in the series that began in 1971.
  • The Indian Navy is deploying the indigenous stealth frigate INS Shivalik for Ex RIMPAC. 
  • The exercise will include multi-domain warfare in a range of scenarios from anti-submarine warfare, multi-ship surface warfare, multinational amphibious landings, and multi-axis defense of the carrier strike group against live forces.

INS Shivalik:

Meaning: 'Standing Tall and rock solid in fight against adversary'

  •  It is an indigenously developed stealth multi-role frigate and built 6000 tonnes guided missile stealth frigate.
  • The category- classification is named after the Indian Mountain Ranges by the name of 'Shivalik Hills'.
  • It is part of the Indian Navy’s eastern fleet deployed for South China Sea and Pacific Ocean.
  • It is built at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), located in Mumbai.
  • It is equipped with a mix of Western, Russian, and Indian weapon systems.

 

JIMEX:

Full form: Japan India Maritime Exercises
  • It is a bilateral Maritime Exercise between Japan and India.
  • Recently, its eighth edition of exercise took place at Yokosuka in Japan
    • India was represented by INS Shivalik, whereas Japan was represented by Guided Missile Destroyer JS Yugiri.
  •  an opportunity to learn from each other’s best practices and facilitates operational interactions between India and Japan. 
  • It also reaffirms their shared commitment towards maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.
