On June 7, 1893, a young lawyer named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was unceremoniously thrown off a train’s first class compartment reserved for ‘whites only’, at the Pietermaritzburg railway station in South Africa. This triggered Gandhi’s first act of civil disobedience, or satyagraha.
